The inspiration for this outfit is a girl’s dress shown in the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1883. It consists of the glossy silk duchesse combined with the matt dupion. The juxtaposition of the textures enhance the outfit and this is quite close to the original, although the embroidery design was created quite independently by me (Karin B.). The ensemble shown here is actually my “trial” version but it was so much work and turned out so well, I did not want to make another one in a different color. The ensemble is a little challenging to make but well worth the effort.
The embroidery is made on the embroidery machine. The design is copyrighted. The model is only available in a kit. The number of kits is quite limited.
I also made the dress maker’s dummy for the Bru since working on the actual doll was a nightmare. The dummy made everything way easier! It is quite easy to create and the patterns and instructions are included in the Bru Ensemble kit.
Measurements of Bru Dress
The measurements allow enough for underwear, including chemise and corset. I worked on the dummy throughout but the same measurements apply if you use the doll. Please check your own doll and adjust patterns accordingly.
Waist: 37.5 cm
Hip: 49 cm
Neck: 22 cm
Chest: 47 cm
Across bust front: 21.5 cm
Across back: 15 cm
Back neck – waist: 20 cm
Front neck – waist: 19 cm
Shoulder: 5 cm
Upper arm circumference: 14 cm
Wrist: 11 cm
Top of arm to wrist: 25 cm
The size can be adjusted at the back and side seams, as well as sleeve seams.
Leather bodies vary slightly, so check first on your doll. Of course, a papermaché body will work as well but again, check measurements and adjust accordingly.
