The perfect sewing machine for the discerning doll-couturier!

Beautiful and relatively rare Singer Featherweight 222K free arm sewing machine in very good condition. She is completely serviced, cleaned, polished, electrically inspected, timed, tuned and test sewn. The sewing sample is shown on a medium-weight fabric without ironing.

The machine weighs as little as  5 kilos and the circumference of the free arm is  a narrow 18.4 cm - perfect for all "fiddly" sewing jobs and, of course, the ideal machine for the doll couturier! She sews the finest through the thickest fabric (tension has to be adjusted, of course), including leather. All doll shoes shown by me in the Gildebrief magazines over the years were stitched on a Featherweight 222 K and I still do all my doll machine sewing only on my 222K.
When the flatbed extension is pushed in place, you can sew larger flat items easily. The difference between the Featherweight 221 and the 222K is that the 222K has the free arm and that you can lower the feed dog easily with a knob (for darning , free-hand embroidery and using the zigzag attachments etc), which most Featherweight 221 machines do not have, instead you have to screw a cover over the feed dog.
She is also really pretty, so it is a real pleasure to sew on this little treasure!

The number of the machine is: EK 321883, 1955, made somewhere between late February to early March.

Here are a couple of emails I received regarding the Featherweight 222K machines from the Gildebrief.

Hi Karin,

Thinking of buying me another Singer  Featherweight , as I live in two places. Miss it when I do not have access to it. The machine was above my expectations of an old  machine.Perfectly reviewed and is a dream to sew on for my doll clothes.

Dear Karin,

Today, the Singer 22K Featherweight arrived safely, with no request for custom duties or fees. I have already set it up and it runs like a charm. A Goldsource Model STU-500 Step Up/Step Down Transformer (Amazon) proved to be a good choice, given the USA’s difference in appliance power voltages. I have just now wound a fresh bobbin with my own thread and stitched several rows on samples of mousseline and mid-weight cotton. I love how easily these fabrics move under the presser foot! The long foot pedal and electrical cords are very helpful; I can use this sewing machine anywhere in the house. Important for my purchase is that you have personally refurbished this machine and that should any questions arise, you are such a terrific and readily available resource. This mid-century 222K Featherweight will undoubtedly provide many happy years of fine machine sewing in my home.

Thank you,

Jennifer

The Featherweight 222K is a free arm machine with a flat bed extension table. She sews only a straight stitch, forward and back, although additional zig-zag attachments were also made which, amazingly, work quite well but not on very lightweight fabric. She was produced in Kilbowie, Scotland, then the largest sewing machine factory worldwide. Every bolt, every hook, every screw or wooden part was made in-house in those days. The Singer Featherweight machines were incredibly popular and the slogan was that every machine would last for at least 100 years, and that is proving to be true!  They are virtually indestructible. The Featherweight 222K was only made in Kilbowie (hence the letter "K") and they were hardly ever exported to the USA, since Singer USA considered them too costly and complicated to manufacture. The flat-bed Featherweight 221 was copiously produced in the US and Canada and was a major success for Singer, albeit she did not have a free arm, but in most other aspects she is very similar to the 222K. The Featherweight 222K was produced from 1953 to 1961 and only about 100,000 machines were produced altogether. No wonder they are quite rare!

This machine has been completely overhauled and serviced and she sews beautifully. All electrical components have been checked, cleaned and serviced and cords have been replaced. I have been sewing all doll garments on my 222K for over 12 years now and never had a problem.

The motor is a 210-230 volt motor and it will run perfectly in the US (of 110 volt) with a STEP-UP transformer that can be purchased for little money from Amazon and other outlets. The machine runs on minimal electricity, so it is environmentally very friendly.

The machine itself weighs around 5 kilos (with the flat bed but without the case)
The case is in good condition with 1 key supplied.
The decals are in good condition and original.
She has a number of scratches on the flat bed extension and some minor ones on the body - she is  pre-loved but this does not inhibit the stitching quality! Please check the photos carefully.
The number is: EK 321883 and she was made between mid-February and beginning of March, 1955.

A wonderful machine that can serve you and your children for decades to come, with just a little care and attention!
Extra bobbins (new ones) will be available here soon, as will be extra accessories!
The perfect machine for every doll couturier and certainly my all-time favorite machine.
The machine plus case, accessories and packaging weighs  a little over 12 kilos.
