Ostrich feathers

A nicely placed ostrich feather lends your doll hat that special something. We are offering you two sizes: ST-4001 are feathers with a strong shaft, nicely shaped tip and long vanes. Lenght ca. 30-35 cm. ST-4002 are feathers with a softer shaft, a fairly thin and pointed tip and shorter vanes, which are particularly suited for dolls of most sizes. Lenght ca. 35-45 cm. Feathers look particularly good when they are made up of more than one feather, giving them a more luxurious look. Especially the tip improves from this “filler” treatment. For a feather with a scant tip, use the following method (See photos under "More Photos"): 1. This feather will be re-vamped. (Photo 1) 2. Cut the feather into a nice new tip. Reshape the cut-off piece as well. (Photos 2) 3. Pull the vanes over the edge of a palette knife to curl them (no more than about 3 - 5 vanes at a time). Then kink the shaft to curve the feather at intervals of about 8 to 10 mm. Pull it over the palette knife to curve it nicely. (Photo 3) You can use the feather singly, or you can stitch the small feather under the tip of the larger feather along the shaft using long buttonhole stitches and matching thread. Try combining feathers of different shades or colors for a wonderful effect. For larger dolls, try combining feather ST-4001 with a filler underneath of feather ST-4002. Curl and kink both of them together.
